Bullet Time
Me, The Wife, and my in-laws were just chilling at Maizuru park after munchin on some street food. I had the Sony A7Cr in my hand since I was already taking some photos around the park while they were sat down under one of the trees. I then heard a loud rumbling noise behind us. A plane that just took off from the nearby airport and it was about to fly above us. Almost instantly, I ran towards the next tree in front of us, all while putting the Sony back in the bag. Then I pulled the M6 out of the bag, dialed the settings, stood under the tree while looking through the viewfinder, and clicked the shutter as soon as I saw plane.
I didn’t think too much of it until my wife saw the scans and asked me about it…
Wife: Why didn’t you just take the photo with the Sony?
Me: Well, I wanted to shoot it in film.
Wife: But you could’ve missed the shot! You were already holding the Sony, and the plane was flying super fast!
Only then did I realize how risky that was. In the moment it felt like I had all the time in the world to dial my settings and take that shot. But according to her, the whole thing only took 2–3 seconds. I really could’ve missed that shot!
Hearing the story from her POV filled me with an immense sense of fulfillment. I’m just a hobbyist who shoot for fun. and I’ve only been shooting with an M camera for a year. I started with a digital M body (M10) and the transition was brutal. It took me months just to get the focusing right, and then a few more months before I was able to make photos I was actually happy with. It’s not a very easy system to use, but it’s the one that I chose — my dream camera — the same one that my heroes used.
This may not be the best photo I’ve taken, but it’s certainly one of my favorites and one that I’m most proud of.
